On Monday, February 13, at 7 pm, the Charleston Center for Photography will welcome Jeff Dodge.

Photographing Charleston, Savannah and the Coastal Islands, getting published and forging a career in travel photography.

So you think you're a good shooter and you like to write. Finding a publisher in the world of travel photography is surprisingly doable. It might even spawn a career.

This Second Monday Lecture details my on the fly experience, photographing and authoring a travel book for WW Norton Publishers. Still life enthusiasts, nature photographers, photojournalists, fine arts devotees and photo illustrators will all learn how to jump-start a career in publishing. Attendees will learn how to follow through to finished product and tackle the most difficult part of the process which is selling your labor of love. Eventually, hopefully, you'll find an agent and studio manager so your time is spent cultivating ideas, shooting photographs and leaving business affairs to others.

We'll also touch on how travel photography offers numerous avenues to a career in professional photography.

Jeff Dodge has been a professional photographer for over 25 years, working in Europe and the United States for corporate and editorial clients worldwide. A partial client list includes, American Express, Philip Morris, NYSE, Bloomberg Financial, Merrill Lynch, Success Magazine, Institutional Investor, Asia Inc. and Forbes, among others.

Dodge has been making photographs in Charleston, Savannah and the islands for the past 15 years. He lives with his family in Charleston, South Carolina.

At my school, you can fill out an application to spend a day shadowing a professional in town. I'm really glad my mum showed me Mrs. Pearsall's work. Based off her portfolio, I chose to spend the day interning with her.

The picture above is Stacy, which I shot with my Canon Rebel T1i and an 18-55mm lens.

Today I have learnt a lot about lighting, composition, and exposure settings. I also got to see how to use the Lastolite TriGrip diffuser and reflector.

I started the day observing how to use Adobe Photoshop CS5 for various tasks such as removing blemishes and wrinkles, or doing nips and tucks. I even learned how a Wacom Tablet works too.

I took all of the pictures in this blog and edited them in the onOne Perfect Photo Suite 6 software.

The photo above (and below) is of me and Stacy photographing an old house.

It was loads of fun!

5 Cool Gadgets and Gear (That I Can't Quite Justify On My Student Budget)

1. Impossible Project PX 680 Color Shade First Flush, $21.99 for 8 exposures

The Impossible Project, started in 2008 after Polaroid stopped making instant film, is using a former Polaroid factory in the Netherlands to attempt to create new films for Polaroid SX-70 and 600 cameras. They started with "SilverShade" monochromatic films, but now also make "ColorShade" films. Between the facts that the results aren't yet to par with Polaroid film and the price comes out to almost $3/exposure, the Impossible Project film is something that I will probably try at some point, but can't see myself using on a regular basis.

2. Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera, estimated retail around $6,800

There are so many things about this camera that are drool-worthy, such as its ability to record 1920 x 1080 HD video, a 18.1Mp full-frame CMOS sensor (I'm determined that my next camera will be a full-frame camera, though a less high-end one), 61-point AF, and up to 12 fps (RAW + JPEG) continuous shooting. Beyond the technical stuff, it's a ridiculously legit camera, with a magnesium alloy body and a whole slew of buttons and information screens. Honestly a lot of the specs of this camera go way over my head, but based on what I've read I kind of think of it as the superhero love child of the higher-end Canon sports and studio cameras. I mean, with a name like "X," how could it be anything other than a superhero?

3. The iPhone Lens Dial (Wide Angle, Fisheye, and Telephoto), $249 (plus, for that matter, an iPhone… $200-$400, plus the wireless service price)

Okay, so despite (or maybe because of) loving my Macbook Pro and iPod, I'm a little wary of Apple taking over the world. That said, iPhones and their cameras are just so fun! My next phone will probably be an iPhone, and I will probably join the wave of "iPhonographers." Which will mean that I will probably join the ranks of people longingly eying sleek, expensive accessories like this lens dial, which adds wide angle, fisheye, and telephoto lenses to your options. Given my tendency to break phones and phone accessories, this will probably stay solidly on the "want" rather than "need" list, but it's still a neat idea.

4. Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Fisheye Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens, $1,425

Beyond the steep price, this is one of those lenses where half of me says "and how often would you actually use it, exactly?" and the other half says "all day of course because it's just so cool!" On a full-frame body the lens provides a circular 180 degree fisheye at the wide end, or a more classic fisheye at the long end. On a cropped sensor body, the lens acts as a fisheye to wide angle, with an approximately 13-24mm equivalent focal length. Though there are some practical applications for such an extreme lens, for someone like me it would be a very expensive (and very awesome!) toy.

5. Lytro light field camera, $399 for model with 8GB internal memory, $499 for 16GB

Apparently the idea of a light field camera has been floating around for a while now, and some experimental and industrial or scientific models have been made, but as far as I can tell the Lytro camera is the first offering aimed at consumers. The camera body itself is essentially a tube, with a lens at one end and a touch screen at the other. The lens offers a constant, wide, f/2 aperture and "8x optical zoom lens," though the company's website doesn't specify the focal lengths of this range. The images the Lytro camera produces are not especially high resolution in the traditional sense, but can be refocused after they are taken (with some limitations - for example, refocusing to a sharp infinity point is unlikely if your original focal point was fairly close). Right now the technology is young, and, in my opinion, still falls solidly in the "gadget" category, but it is a fun and intriguing development in consumer-grade technology.

Interdisciplinary Adventures: Hannah's Feminist Because Project

One of my favorite things about my college career has been the fact that I’m double majoring in two mostly disparate fields: gender studies and photography. When I’m frustrated with one, I can switch gears to the other, and when I’m enjoying them both, I can try to merge the two.

Last semester, for an open-ended project in one of my gender classes, a friend, Meredith Porter, and I started a blog (or more precisely, a Tumblr, which is a "social-blogging platform" according to businessinsider.com) called “Feminist Because.” Originally it was Meredith's idea, and she just enlisted me as a photographer, but the project quickly became a really fun collaborative effort. The blog features people holding signs that say “I’m a feminist because” with their reason. The results have been varied, and have received a lot of support on Tumblr.

The project has also been interesting from a photographic standpoint. The first batch of photos were done on a tight schedule (amid the flurry of final projects and exams at the end of the semester), so they weren't elaborate photoshoots, just quick natural light portraits. Another aspect of the project that I expected to be a challenge was how to make "attractive" photos of people that are just people, not models. (As a feminist there's a lot I could say on this, but here I'll stick to my photographer's perspective.) However, I decided to go for honesty and simplicity, and I like the results. Throw some diffused lighting on someone, accessorize with a smile, have a nice blurred background behind them, and it becomes pretty easy to get a good picture. No, these aren't the most amazing photos I've taken, but I think they do the job, which is a nice feeling.

Hi everyone! My name is Hannah Reed and I’m the latest intern at CCforP. I’m from Greenville, SC and go to College of Charleston. I’m a junior, double majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies and Studio Art (Photography). I’m experienced with both digital photography (through my own work) and black and white 35mm film (through classwork in my major), but I’m excited to learn more about digital through my time at CCforP. I’ll be at the Center most weeks on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons, doing anything and everything that needs to get done, as well as assisting on a few photo shoots. I’ll also be contributing to the various CCforP social media, such as this blog, so if you don’t see me in person you’ll probably be hearing from me again on here.

Intro to Studio Lighting Workshop With Alice Keeney

Yesterday, I taught an Intro to Studio Lighting Workshop at the Charleston Center for Photography. We had a great turnout, and a super successful day! The first half of the day was spent going over basics of the Elinchrom strobes and lighting theory. Later on in the afternoon, we set up three different stations and played with a variety of scenarios. Many thanks to a great group of students, and our beautiful model Morgan!

We tethered my camera to my MacBook Pro using Lightroom 3 so the students could see the results of the lighting set ups as I shot them. Here are some of my shots, followed by the work of my students. Designed for the working photographer, the D4 meets the most-demanding photog's needs and then some. Packed with features essential to getting the job done, and getting it done well this rig is more than a digital camera, it's a shooter's bread and butter.

Building off the basic structure of its predecessor, the D4 goes big in a number of ways which are sure to be appreciated. The camera features a 16.2Mp 36 x 23.9mm CMOS sensor with Nikon's FX-format and the EXPEED3 image processor. ISO sensitivity can now be extended as low as ISO 50 or as high as 204,800 with a standard range of 100-12,800 ISO. Additionally, 10 frames per second continuous shooting in FX-format for up to 200 shots ensures the decisive moment will not be missed.

The D4 records in RAW, JPEG, TIFF, and RAW + JPEG files. Metering options include RGB 3D Color Matrix III metering, center-weighted, and spot. Additionally, compatible storage media includes the future of professional storage, XQD memory cards, and Type I CompactFlash memory cards (UDMA compliant). Of course, NIKKOR AF-S and AF-I lenses are compatible with the D4 body, putting an extensive line of lenses at the photographer's disposal.

Another improvement on D4's little brother would be the slightly bigger LCD screen. Up from 3", the D4 has a 3.2" LCD monitor with a 170° viewing angle, approximately 100% frame coverage, automatic monitor brightness control, and Live View. In Live View the image can be enlarged up to 46x to make on the spot focus confirmation. Surrounding the monitor are illuminated buttons for ease of use even in low light. Additionally, quick access Live View confirms exposure, white balance, monitor hue, histogram, focus mode, AF area mode, and focusing accuracy with ease.

The D4 also boasts stellar auto focus features - like 51 AF points, an AF mode selector switch, and fast AF point selection. All three of these components of the AF system ensure accurate, fast shooting whether the subject is a room full of children or a high-speed sporting event.

Of course, the D4 wouldn't be a professional level DSLR if it didn't include full HD video capture. The D4 does so, making it equally a pro videographer's tool as much as a pro photographer's. From 1080p broadcast quality video at 30 or 24 fps to full manual control to the option to add an external mic for stereo audio capture, the D4 isn't just a digital camera that also captures video.

Features like the aforementioned Live View allow the videographer to confirm capture of their footage on the camera's LCD and an external (optional) monitor simultaneously. It also gives you access to Picture Controls to handle the look and feel of the video, in-camera. Peak audio meters also allow the videographer to adjust sound levels manually in 20 incremental steps. Remote start and stop of view using wired and wireless remote accessories is also an option, among many others. (source B&H)

Getting to Know Your Camera Workshop
with Stacy Pearsall and Andy Dunaway

This on-day workshop is designed with the very beginner photographer in mind. If you just got a digital camera, then this workshop is what you need. Instructors, Stacy and Andy, will give students hands-on camera orientation training and allow each student to openly ask any questions they have about their gear. They'll go over universal camera terms, buttons, functions, and operations - no matter the brand. They'll also teach the basic principles of photography to help students get well on their way to making pictures with their new cameras. A portion of the workshop will be dedicated to actually shooting the camera with Stacy and Andy present, so they may guide and teach each student how to properly use their equipment.

Equipment: Digital Camera is required and both DSLR or Point-and-Shoots are welcome.

Introduction to Digital Photography Workshop

While the principles of photography have not changed, there are some considerations which accompany the use of digital camera. Selection of a file type, white balance, and image resolution are among the basics of digtial photography. The workshop will also cover the fundamentals of exposure, the effects of shutter speed and aperture, and lenses. Students must have a digital SLR camera, but do not need to know how to use it for this beginner workshop.

Basic Studio Lighting with Elinchrom Lights Workshop with Alice Keeney
	In this basic lighting workshop, students will learn the basics of Elinchrom lighting system available in the CCforP Studio. Students will learn how to assemble, trigger, and meter for a proper exposure. Several basic lighting techniques will be discussed, and students will take turns creating images.
Prerequisites: Students must be able to shoot in fully manual mode, and must be comfortable will all modes of their camera. Equipment: Students must have a Digital SLR camera with and interchangeable lenses. This camera must be able to operate in manual mode. A hand held light meter is suggested, but not required. It is not required to know how to use the light meter. A sturdy tripod is also suggested, but not required. I had the rare opportunity of photographing WWII veterans during a Pearl Harbor remembrance dinner. I feel blessed to hear their stories and to have a chance to know them, even if briefly. Their legacy will last through the ages.

Veterans Day Tribute

Today, I'd like to wish all former and current military a happy Veterans Day. Thank you for your service, especially my husband Andy, my dad, sister, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Below I've shared just a few pictures of some of my family members who've served. I couldn't put all of them, but they're a good representation! I've even got a picture of my great grandfather, who was a Marine in WWI. Did you know....

Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, is an annual United States holiday honoring military veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It is coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

Finding Inspiration

I'm always watching my friend's and colleagues photographic creativity, which in-turn inspires me to get motivated. Even though I'm a professional photographer, I never stop learning. I continue to evolve my craft by looking at other photographer's works as well as furthered education. I try to look at photographers who are outside of my niche of military related photography and who may not be as well known as others too.

I like this guy, Clark Little, who's a surfer that started photographing the waves he was riding. He's really taken his niche to a whole new level and the proof's in the pudding.

I also really like this guy, Joey Lawrence, who's not to be mistaken with the 90's era sitcom, Blossom. He's really known for his edgy, tailored light, which can be seen on posters and ads for Twilight, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Pawn Stars. I especially like his lit, photojournalism-inspired works from Africa.

I enjoy Frank Doorhof's fashion and light, plus he's an educator. I really learn a lot from this guy.

I also really love Mary Calvert for her photojournalism, not to mention she's been my mentor for many, many years.

Now I know some of you may have heard of the guys above, and I'm certain you know this next person I'm about to mention... Brian Storm of Media Storm. He and his associates concentrate on multimedia using photography, videography and audio to tell stories of social significance.

As for sports, there are quite a few I like such as Mark Rebilas (former Navy photographer), Tom Bol, Michael Clark and, of course, Bill Frakes.

It's important to have photographers you're inspired by, no matter what level of photographer you are. Have fun in your search. In the mean time, I'm happy to share my list of muses.

What to Wear

When I was in the service, I never had to worry about what I was going to wear to work as a combat photographer. I usually wore my battle dress uniform (BDU) or my flight suit, both of which had a ton of pockets. I'd stuff batteries, flash cards, notepads, my phone and more in all the free space. However when I got out, all that changed. I had to dress to impress while maintaining clothing functionality as a photographer. There's not a lot out there on the market for us to choose from as far as pants and shirts are concerned.

My husband, Andy Dunaway, and I enjoy the 5.11 Tacti cal line of pants. They have been around for 30+ years and are used mostly by law enforcement, EMS and FBI among others. Though they weren't designed for photographers, they certainly are a great fit! They are made of durable material and have lots of pockets. One other perk is the the large belt loops, which will allow you the option to use a camera belt and drop pouch system like the one Kata has. You need a nice, solid, thick belt that can distribute and hold the weight evenly around your waste. Check out the Rigger's Belt by Spec-Ops. There are six color options and has up to 8,000 pound tensile strength. You can't go wrong.

As far as shirts are concerned, I believe collared shirts look the most professional. When I'm working and moving around lighting gear, I do work up a sweat. Therefore, wearing a stiffly starched dress shirt isn't an option. Both Andy and I wear Columbia sportswear. They have a men's and women's line that will keep you cool and looking professional. I like the various color and style options they offer.

Lastly, I'd like to talk about shooter's vest and jackets. Traditionally, the first thing that comes to mind is a fly fisherman in the river casting his line and wearing a khaki vest and floppy hat. Well that's not my idea of fashion forward. Recently, Manfrotto released a new line of vests and jackets designed with the photographer in mind and I'm a HUGE fan. The soft shell jacket in particular is wind resistant and has a seamed sealed water proof design. The pockets are large enough to stuff whatever gear you want for a shoot on the fly.

The a part of being a professional photographer is dressing professional. Walking the fine line between fashion and function can be tough. I hope this blog helps a bit. I'll keep y'all posted as new clothes and such hit the shelves!

DSLR Camera: Mirror or Mirrorless

I get asked quite a bit about different types of cameras. There's DSLR (digital single lens reflex) and mirrorless DSLR. Most professional photographers use various brands of DSLR cameras such as Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax or Sony to name a few. The traditional DSLR uses an optical viewfinder that a mirror to reflect light from the lens to the viewfinder. This allows you to see exactly what the lens sees, so if the picture is in or out of focus you'll know. You can also track action through the viewfinder, which makes a traditional DSLR camera the best choice for fast action like sports, or in my case combat. DSLR's have a quite focus response time and are known for their ability to shoot multiple frames consecutively, unlike their mirrorless counterparts. The traditional DSLR can varry in prices on average from $400 - $6,000. You can get your hands on kits, which come with a body and lens. You can also see what's out there for certified used and get a great deal! Check HERE from time to time. Just remember that you should be extra cautious if your purchasing anything from E-Bay, Craig's List and the like. You never know what that camera's been through.

On the other hand, the mirrorless DSLR is lighter, more compact and definitely more quite. If you don't the attention drawn to you, this is a great option - not to mention you can fit most of them in your purse or pocket. Without a mirror it uses an electronic viewfinder, which means you have no traditional viewfinder that you put your eye to. Instead, you use an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen on the back of the camera. Most mirrorless cameras use pancake lenses, which don't detach from the body. However, more and more are offering interchangeable lens options. There are a ton of mirrorless DSLR camera options such as the Nikon J1, Nikon V1, Panasonic Lumix, Samsung NX-200, Pentax Q, Sony NEX, Olympus E-P3, Leica M9, and so many more... Phew. These cameras start around $400 and go up to $1,200, with the exception of the Leica which is somewhere in the neighborhood of $6,995'ish.

If you choose to go down the road of a mirrorless DSLR camera, then you have accessory options. There's M. Zuiko Micro 4/3 Lenses for the Olympus, External Flash for the Sony and Colorful Cases for the Nikon.

Both types have their benefits. I have both and use them for various projects. I hope you find one that suits your needs. Happy shooting!

Got Memory?

Got memory? I have a terrible short-term memory, as some of you may know. But that's not what this blog is about. Actually, I wanted to talk memory for your camera.

There's a lot to choose from and they all perform differently and offer various perks. There's the Eye-Fi that automatically transfers images to your computer and organizes photos and videos for you. There's only SD cards available. You also must have WiFi, obviously, and the camera must be turned on in the house for the transfer to work. Check out this video that explains more about Eye-Fi...

There's also Hoodman RAW, which is a compact flash card, and the Hoodman RAW STEEL, which is an SD card. Here's what's good to know about these cards... they are really fast, solid state drives. You can download 1GB of images in 15 seconds actually - crazy speed. The Hoodman RAW STEEL is literally made of steel and happens to be water proof too.

I use Hoodman, but I also use Lexar and Sandisk too. There are a ton of options with all of the above, such as size and speed. I've always been of the mind that I don't want to have all of my eggs in one basket. The idea of having a Lexar 32GB Card seems scary. However, having a card that size is nice when shooting video and continuous shutter, such as sports.

Beware, though. There are many cards out there that are priced "to sell". Be cautious and don't buy anything simply based on price-point - you get what you pay for. Be sure you're getting the right size and speed for what you're shooting.

... I lost my train of thought.... oh yeah... memory... mine or my cameras? Just kidding! Happy shooting everyone.

Let's talk holidays. Now, I'm not the kind of gal who pops a plastic Santa in my front yard the day after Halloween. I must admit, however, that I will put up the Christmas tree on Thanksgiving. Smart Phone Camera Fun

Most of the time, I'll stick my iPhone in my back pocket and use it as my go-to-point-and-shoot camera. I have several phone apps that I love, including Picture Show, Instagram and Classic Toy. The best part is that these apps are free or relatively inexpensive.

There are a ton of accessories for your iPhone, including lenses! There's a lens maker, Photojojo, that has fish eye, macro, wide angle and telephoto lenses. If you're not an iPhone user, don't worry. The lenses work for other smart phones too. Check out this quick video on how it works.

If you don't want to purchase specialty lenses, then why not buy an adapter so you can use your DSLR camera's lenses?!?! Yes, you can do that. Check out this iPhone SLR Mount by Photojojo.

Attachments like the Alm OWLE Bubo, make it possible to shoot video with a steady hand or on a tripod. It looks a lot like a video game controller, but it works well. You can also use the EnCinema iPhone SLR Lens Adapter to get a unique look.

The cool thing about gadgets, is that there are a never-ending amount of accessory gadgets to go with them. There's microphones, cases and specialty lenses too. I often wonder why I should bother with my big camera at all when there are so many options for my iPhone. However, they each have their perks. I just got back from New York City for the Photo Plus Expo and, believe it or now, it snowed. Needless to say, I'm happy to be back in Charleston, SC, where it's moderately warmer. Although, today there's not a ray of sunshine and the wind is kicking up. You can't have everything. At least there's no snow, yet.

I was thinking about various Halloween projects a photographer could do while walking their kids around Trick-or-Treating and the new GoPro HD Hero 2 came to mind.

It'd be cool to strap this gadget to you or your kid's costume to see the reactions of the folks passing out candy, plus the other great costumes of the neighborhood. Hands would still be free for crossing roads and hauling bags of loot, while still capturing some memories. It's a nice way to create a digital video diary of your son or daughter or both!

Wacom Cintiq 24HD

I've been in NYC most of the week for Photo Plus, PPE, WPPI, or whatever and all they're calling it now, and got to see a lot of cool new gadgets. I've been a fan and dedicated user of Wacom products for a long time.

Right now I use the Wacom Cintiq 12WX 12.1" Interactive Pen Display for all of my picture editing, layout and design. When I first started using my Wacom I wanted to toss the tablet and the pen across the room. I had no idea how it worked and my lack of eye and hand coordination made working with the tablet hard. However, I watched some tutorials, practiced and improved. Now, I can't stand using regular computer mouse or track-pads - go figure.

I stopped by the Wacom booth on the expo floor and saw the Wacom Cintiq 24HD Interactive Pen Display, which is their latest and greatest. Phew, I want one! I'm thinking that it will be my last big purchase for the end of the year - Andy seems to agree!

Nikon V1: My New BFF

A couple of weeks ago was the Eddie Adams Workshop where Andy and I volunteer. It was right after Nikon announced their point and shoot sized camera with a large-sensor and interchangeable lenses, the Nikon V1. Of course, it made its debut there and I got my hands on one for a bit.

I definitely want one for kicking around town. It shoots JPEG and RAW files, video and has a high frame rate of 60 frames per second while in electronic shutter mode. It does well with moving objects, which I imagine would make this a great camera to have court-side for sporting events or my crazy dogs. The continuous AF Mode has a 73 point focal plane phase detection AF system with makes tracking those moving objects much easier.

The camera is compact and lightweight. Due to its mirror-less system, its extremely quite which makes taking pictures without drawing attention to yourself a breeze.

"I guess I see things in a different way from others, but I hear that's a good thing," explains Lauren.

"I put the camera in my bag, so I have it everywhere I go," Lauren says. "Sometimes I catch my little brother with it. He seems to like photography too."

"I had no idea I could draw with light," Lauren says smiling. "During my private lesson with Ms. Stacy, we turned the lights out and used flash lights to draw in the dark. We made swirls, pumpkins and even self portraits."

Today we met up at the Charleston Center for Photography, expecting it to be boring and long, but it was just the opposite. We ate too much candy and got hyped up on sugar and took numerous photos. We walked down King Street and shot pictures along the way - some were pointless and others were amazing and incredible.

We used colored light to make some goofy looking pictures with the lights out. We can't quite tell what they are. Can you? We had lunch. We watched a brief documentary on White House Photographers, which we didn't finish (cough). However, we had to get in the studio and the video was running long.

Everyone loved Noah's looks and natural beauty ("seriously?", said Noah). While trying to make this blog, several computers started malfunctioning. We think it may have something to do with Penny's special powers (she's the dog).

We all had a fantastic time!

So when I retired from the Air Force and started to work with Stacy at The Charleston Center for Photography I knew I wanted to start on some personnel projects.

There is a flag in our compound and with the combination of the amazing clouds we have roll through Charleston it made for really unique photographs. For the last year, I have photographed the flag and cloud formations using the flag as the constant fixture.

This is the picture that started it all.

Eddie Adams Workshop: Team Lilac

Every year for the last six-seven years, Andy and I've been going up to Jeffersonville, NY, to help out with the Eddie Adams Workshop (EAW). Alyssa and her son, August, open their house and farm to about 130 crazy photojournalism industry leaders, photographers and students. It's an amazing site. Mirjam Evers, the EAW Producer, works her magic and making the big event a huge success. I don't envy her job, but she makes it look so easy.

This year I was the team leader for the Lilac Team. I had photographer, Allison Lucas, as my tech-gal, freelance editor for Newsweek, Leah Latella, as my producer and Newsweek photo editor, Jamie Wellford, as my editor - pretty much an all start team.

Ten students from around the world rounded out the remaining ensemble. We had folks from California, Texas and even Nepal!

The guys from Manfrotto Distributions made a big contribution to our Team by getting students to their assignments as well as helping them with lighting too. So a special thanks to Will, Kriss, Anthony and Kevin. I also have to give a shout out to Poon, Ab, Michelle, Alyssa, Mirjam, Hitch, Jim, Mark and Mark! You all rock!

I can't forget the ten most critical people in this equation though and that's the students. Congratulations on getting into and surviving the Workshop. You did very well and made me proud to be part of your Team.

Song About Stacy Pearsall, "God Challenged Me"

This song, "God Challenged Me", was written by two talented musicians, Radney Foster and Darden Smith, as well as Army medic Helen Rosario and myself (Stacy Pearsall). It's all about my experiences as a combat photographer in Iraq.

The video you see below was taken during the song writing process and is sort of rough, which is to be expected. However, the song will be recorded in a proper studio and made available on i-Tunes. "God Challenged Me" will debut at the Faces of Freedom Concert in Colorado Springs, CO, on September 11, 2011. The money raised during the tribute concert will go toward helping combat wounded recover from their injuries through LifeQuest Transitions' rehabilitation programs.

HERO HOUNDS

There's nothing like traveling abroad, but I really enjoy working in my own city. I know we see our "everyday" world as ordinary. However if you look hard enough, there really is some extraordinary out there - usually within driving distance too.

In July, I had the wonderful opportunity to work on a local project with Lowcountry Dog, a regional magazine that's all about dogs. The story was all about uniformed working dogs titled, Hero Hounds.

Using the idea "hero", I decided to try a different approach by creating hero portraits of the handlers and their dogs. Not straying too far from my photojournalism roots either, I also captured the duo's in action.

I used my favorite go-to light, the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra, to illuminate the scenes. It added a more "finished look" and drama to a terrible natural-light situation.

Both dogs and handlers were great and I really enjoyed having the opportunity to get their visual stories in print. The military and police K-9 units do amazing things for us and it's wonderful to honor them.

Though my dogs are not as talented as these furry friends, they work hard at making me smile. I hope you enjoy the pictures and don't forget to pet a dog today!

In the end, you don't have to get your passport stamped to go somewhere and photograph something special. Often, the most meaningful pictures can be made in your own backyard. Best of luck!

Veterans Portrait Project: Georgia Edition

Andy and I traveled down to the Savannah VA Clinic in Savannah, Georgia. In just two days, we photographed 100 veterans from every generation. We met a man who was part of an all African-American long range reconnaissance unit in Vietnam called the Soul Patrol. There's a book out about their time together and the combat they saw. We also met a man who was an Army cook during WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Personally, I was pleased to meet and photograph lots of female veterans. They served in Desert Storm, Desert Shield, OIF and OEF - pretty incredible.

Gold at the Warrior Games

Due to my combat injuries, I was eligible to compete as an athlete on the Air Force team for the inaugural Wounded Warrior Games 2010, which is sponsored by the US Paralympics. So, when I was invited I said yes.

It was an amazing experience and this year was no different. Well, perhaps a little different. This year, I got to bring my husband and fellow photographer, Andy Dunaway. Not only did I have his support in the cheering section, but he also helped document the team throughout the training camp and Games.

With the support of our fellow Post 166 members of the American Legion in Goose Creek, Bob Woodruff Foundation and Hero Miles, Andy's airfare and lodging were fully covered. We can't thank them enough, because without their support we couldn't have afforded such an adventure.

I did my best to try and describe what the Games were all about and the wounded service men and women who took part in them. I was pleased that Andy got to see it firsthand.

Aside from the personal fulfillment he experienced, he also made some tremendous images. On a photographic note, we've both been biting at the bit to shoot with the new Hoodman compact flash cards. We'd heard they were lightening fast and durable too. So, Andy decided to give them a try at the Warrior Games.

My and my teams' schedules were packed from dawn until dusk with track, wheelchair basketball, seated volleyball, rifle shooting, archery, swimming and cycling. I was physically exhausted as I watched Andy plugging away at his computer. Every night, he'd get back to the room and start downloading cards. He'd comment, "This Hoodman card rocks. It's so fast." I knew he was sold on them. If Andy was happy, I'd certainly be pleased too - no doubt. I was happy that Andy didn't loose sleep while waiting for his images to transfer from flash card to computer. I could see he was just as tired as I was. Thanks to Hoodman, he could spend his small windows of spare time resting up for the next day's events. This allowed him to concentrate more on capturing great images like these below.

Athletes disabilities range from severe burns and amputations to traumatic brain injury and paralysis, so all sports are adaptive.

The torch bearer for this year was Operation Enduring Freedom veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta.

Spinal cord injuries like the one Jason Morgan (above) sustained, leave many wounded vets paralyzed. However, they can still race using specialized chairs such as the one you see above. Morgan was injured during a special forces operation and nearly lost his life. Like a true warrior, he battled through months in the hospital and painful surgies. Despite all that, he came to the Games and recieved multiple medals at the games!

Swimming is used a lot at the Center for the Intrepid, where most of the military's amputees go to recover. So, it would stand to reason that many of them are ready to bring their 'A' game to the competition, which they did.

Wheelchair basketball is madness. Athletes do not have to be paraplegics or amputees to compete in this sport - though the majority of them are. Having everyone in chairs allows all the athletes to be on the same playing field. It's very unique and highly rambunctious, as you can tell by Andy's pictures above. Fouls are not slaps on the wrists or holding shirts - they are flipping chairs and full-face-plants.

Our pal, Isreal Deltoro (aka: DT), featured in the portrait (left), is an amazing man and a hero. He was serving in Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device detonated. The flames burned over 80% of his body and yet he survived. He's a walking miracle, as many of the men and women at the Games are. According to DT, the hat he's wearing in the picture is his favorite hat, which he was wearing when the bomb went off. His friends found the hat near him and had it for safe keeping until he awoke from a coma months later. I believe the hat represents his strength and resilience - it may be tattered, but it's still in working order. By the way, DT has qualified to try out for the US Paralympic team. So, there may be a chance we'll see him in London!

Ultimately, everything came together nicely for both Andy and I. He documented and archived each athlete's tremendous courage and accomplishments for the history books. They'll have those moments forever. I'm proud of Andy and the athletes.

Thanks to the sponsors like Deloitte, USO, US Paralympics and so many others, we're givin a chance to prove that we are valuable members of society and that we're capable of anything we put our minds to. The coaches and staff gave us the support and motivation we needed to train hard to keep going. They are a very special and important part of the Games too. I want to thank the Air Force for not forgetting the Airman too. It's events like this that give us something to look forward to. I look forward to seeing familiar faces next year, but also welcoming in new friends too.

It has been some time since the last Depth of Field. My apologies for that. I think this will make up for it. A native Texan, Stacy Pearsall joined the US Air Force in 1997. After serving in Nebraska and then later in England she was assigned to the 1st Combat Camera Squad. Now retired, this former Staff Sargent combat photographer became a two-time winner of the Military Photographer of the Year award (the only woman ever to win it twice), has stared her own business and was even featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Not only is Stacy an amazing photographer she is a hero in the truest form of the word. During her three tours in Iraq, she earned the Bronze Star Medal and Commendation with Valor for heroic actions under fire.

In this interview I speak with Stacy about how she became a photographer and what a combat photographer does. She tells us stories about her time in Iraq and what she is doing now. Whether you are an American or not, if you are photographer, this will be an interesting listen.

2011 Wounded Warrior Games

Stacy and I have been gone for the last two weeks for the 2nd annual Wounded Warrior Games. Stacy competed and I took pictures.
